Cortona – the oldest city in Italy
…. it says at least they own. The city wall, or the oldest parts of it, are from around 400 BC, so there is at least some truth in it. The whole area is old Etruscan land with many cities built on the mountain tops, with the City of Perugia as the largest today.
Cortona overlooks directly on the Lake Trasimeno, where Hannibal defeated 25.000 Romans that got killed and down to the lush Chianina valley that in particular, is known for its beef cattle.
Cortona has a number of tourist visits, especially after the movie “Under the Tuscan Sun” was filmed here, but the local life flourishes still with the old in the square, the weekly market and restaurants where there are pictures of the food outside.
